Win 7 upgrade kit doesn't include 8920G!
(10 posts)-
I've already upgraded my 8920G to Windows 7 Ultimate using a Microsfot Anytime disk plus downloaded drivers, but since I've having the odd problem (Cinedash volume control doesn't work right), I decided to order the 'free' upgrade disks anyway.
It's just as well that I didn't wait for it, as it turns out the disk won't properly upgrade an 8920G as it isn't listed in the Notebook entries!
What first prompted me to look at this was that I tried the 3rd stage and it seemed to do nothing at all. So I had a look at the disk contents to see what versions of drivers it suggested and found that the 8920G simply wasn't in the XML files! The 8930, 8930G and 8935G are, but not the 8920G.
So anyone attempting an upgrade of an 8920G using this kit is quite likely to fail!
Great going, Acer!

the website clearly lists the eligible models.

My question is why Acer apparently couldn't be bothered to create the appropriate hardware list and add any missing drivers for the 8920G (and other models) to the upgrade kit, since it's a model they were quite happy for suppliers to advertise and sell as eligible for a free upgrade?
Since many of the drivers are common acress models, this would mostly have meant adding a few XML files to the DVD.
For information, I bought the PC from SimplyAcer.com, who describe themselves on their website as an Acer Online Partner and say:
Simply Acer is the UK's premier online shop for Acer Notebooks, Acer Desktops and Acer Servers. Backed by unrivaled support by Acer themselves you'll never regret buying an Acer computer from Simply Acer.
Unfortunately, I cannot agree with either of the sentiments of the 2nd sentence - I don't feel Acer's support could ever be described as <b>unrivaled</b> in a positive sense (as is implied above) and I do regret buying my Acer computer.
I actually feel this is a great shame, as technically I think this is very nice machine. Unfortunately, Acer's support really lets it down and I don't feel it would have taken much to significantly improve things in this area.

the 8920 does not support SLIC 2.1 which is what W7 requires for OEM activation.
As hard as it is to fathom, the 8920 was a Q2 2008 model. Windows7 was not even close to release at that time.
In terms of computers and model refreshes every 3 to 6 months the 8920 is an "old" machine which has been surpassed by 2 newer model lines.

I'm not sure of the relevance of the SLIC version. Surely all that means is that the upgrade process would need a valid key and couldn't use OEM activation.
My point was that the upgrade kit DVD didn't include the driver list for the 8920G even though many (all?) the drivers are common to the 8930G.
Since I've already upgraded to Windows 7 the upgrade kit actually started at stage 3 (updating drivers), but since the 8920G wasn't listed, it couldn't find a list of drivers to install. It would have been so easy for Acer to include this list, I'm surprised they didn't.
Or are you saying that the only models Acer customised the kit for are those which could have had Windows 7 pre-installed and OEM activated if it had been availale?
That is, Acer only really support the upgrade of models with SLIC 2.1, but, obviously, are obliged to provide the free upgrade kit if an older model was bought after the offer date; however, such upgrades have to be 'manually'.

@TechieDiva: Sorry, I don't understand that reference.

OK, I still don't understand the *rolls eyes* reference, but can't be the only person who ordered the upgrade kit expecting that Acer would at least provide the list of relevant drivers even if I needed to enter the license key manually.
I would have thought that it would be quite easy for Acer to add the relevant XML file to the DVD.
I'm also sure that it would be quite easy for them to determine which models were still selling in the months prior to the expected release of Win7, even if they weren't actually current and didn't have the builtin key for Win7 and to have used that information when assembling the supported model list.

Hey ... at least you have an upgrade kit, some of us can't even find that. So now ... none of my Acer programs work!!!
