Wireless signal poor on Aspire 5542G-5281
(4 posts)-
Hello,
I just bought a brand new Acer Aspire 5542G-5281 to replace my Toshiba S215-7422 and seem to be having some issues with the wireless signal, I can have both laptops setup right next to each other and the Toshiba will have almost full bars and great download speeds and the Acer will give me two bars if I'm lucky with very low speeds. I have not installed much on it, any settings or drivers I should be installing on this to fix it? I have Win7
Thanks,

I too have this exact same problem with my 5542G-5281.
From this very chair in which I now sit, I was able to pick up as many as 10 access points from my neighbors, the 3 strongest ones displayed 5 bars of signal strength on my Acer AS5810TZ-4657 Timeline.
Due to circumstances I was forced to replaces it. I chose a 5542G-5281 and was absolutely crushed when I set it up and found that most of the time I can't get a strong enough signal to connect.
It may as well be a desktop computer since if has no value outside the home right now.
SignalUp has become SignalTwoThumbsDown.
Please help, there must be something simple going on here.

If you are confident of opening up the laptop take out the cover containing the wireless module.
Check White Wire is connected to 1 or Main and Black Wire is connected to 2 or Auxilary.
Then update the Wireless Adapter driver from driver-station (google)Posted 1 year ago # -
Ok, I popped the cover off and I can see the white and black wires are connected to the wireless card... they aren't labeled from what I can see, but they are connected. My driver is 8.0.0.225 (Atheros AR5B93).
I just checked windows update and discovered that there is an optional update available for my wireless card... Installed and now see that the driver is 8.0.0.238.
After update and restart from my basement apartment I now have 11 access points to choose from, 8 of them are 4 bars or greater.
Thanks for the help, I am cured !
