It’s not every morning you get to sit down with Gianfranco Lanci before he has breakfast and grill him on the subject of smartphones but that’s exactly what Michelle Caruso-Cabrera from CNBC did when she met up with him at the closing ceremony of the Vancouver Olympic Games on her way to the CTIA Wireless [...]

You see it just wasn’t gonna happen…
It’d be great to have enough time to actually see some of the events you help create but while the senior management were strutting their stuff and answering some very intelligent questions form the journalists in London last week, I was busy putting the finishing touches to no fewer than 9 different projects.
But for those of you (like me) who didn’t make it, and want to know what was said, here’s a selection of videos I’ve just been pointed to.
Oh, and FWIW I still have those 9 projects on my desk…

OK, this is beginning to resemble a corporate broadcast outpost and as I’m a little uncomfortable with that title, this will be the last post of this kind for a while. Maybe.

On 27 June, the New York Times published a very interesting article on the rise and rise of Acer.
The article focuses on the man of the moment, Gianfranco Lanci, who I’ve had the privilege of working with for over ten years. One of the most fascinating things about Gianfranco is just how down-to-earth the man is. And also how funny. I’ve been at conferences until 2 or 3 in the morning the night before the main event writing and re-writing management presentations and at that hour he’s the only guy in the room with enough energy to crack a few jokes.

Hands up… How many of you laughed when Gianfranco Lanci said Acer would soon become the world’s second-biggest PC brand? It’s OK. I’m sure many people inside Acer thought the same, although they wouldn’t if they’d actually met the guy.
There’s an interesting article published on 15th April by Gartner that shows just how close we are to reaching that goal.
“Dell and Acer finished the quarter in a virtual tie for the No. 2 position in the worldwide PC market; they are separated by just 0.1 percent points”
